Ben Cohen, one of the founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream empire, has produced a provacative short outlining the size of America's nuclear stockpile (which is frighteningly excessive - far beyond what is necessary for either defense, or to destroy every other country on the planet). And the sad part is how many things could be improved if just some of the ongoing taxpayer money that is required to maintain this huge stockpile was put to other uses. Check this link out - it's information you need to know.

Media training has increased for U.S. forces going to Iraq, reports Editor & Publisher, "becoming mandatory for Army troops since October" and taking "higher priority" for Marines. The training involves "one or two hours of briefings by public-affairs specialists." Soldiers "are urged to speak with the press as a way of promoting the positive elements of the operation, but not to lie or speak about issues with which they are not familiar." Soldiers are also given regularly updated, wallet-sized "talking point" cards, "to keep up with the conflict's changing issues and the proximity of embedded reporters." The North Carolina News & Observer reported that one talking point given to troops at Fort Bragg was, "We are not an occupying force."

There are various reports that Selective Service is updating contingency plans for draft of doctors, nurses and other health care workers in case of national emergency that overwhelms military's medical corps.

The pitch entices young doctors to sign up, where they may serve in Texas, Germany, Washington D.C. or *wink wink* various locations. On a morale-boosting trip to Kuwait to talk to soldiers, Sec. of Defense Rumsfeld received several tough questions. One asked why the troops didn't have enough armor for their vehicles.

Spc. Thomas Wilson had asked the defense secretary, "Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles?" Shouts of approval and applause arose from the estimated 2,300 soldiers who had assembled to see Rumsfeld.

Rumsfeld basically told them to suck it up and deal with it.

"You go to war with the Army you have," Rumsfeld replied, "not the Army you might want or wish to have."
You'd think that in a year and a half, they could have made some progress towards getting the equipment they need, though.

There's been much discussion on whether or not there will be a need for a draft in the wake of the Iraq invasion. President Bush says there will be no draft. However, one thing most American people don't know is that Bush's No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 contains an overlooked amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, requiring public high schools to turn over students' names, addresses and telephone numbers to military recruiters. There's no dodging selective service these days.

Some sites are even poking fun at the idea of a draft. Who are you going to believe? Will we have a draft?
