First hand account of the Iraq mosque killing

I knew NBC would be responsible with the footage. But there were complications. We were part of a video "pool" in Falluja, and that obligated us to share all of our footage with other networks. I had no idea how our other "pool" partners might use the footage. I considered not feeding the tape to the pool -- or even, for a moment, destroying it. But that thought created the same pit in my stomach that witnessing the shooting had. It felt wrong. Hiding this wouldn't make it go away. There were other people in that room. What happened in that mosque would eventually come out. I would be faced with the fact that I had betrayed truth as well as a life supposedly spent in pursuit of it.

Get ready kids. It's coming. In the wake of the NBC video showing an American soldier gunning down a helpless Iraqi in a mosque, conservative pundits are launching a new smokescreen, calling attention to supposed "hostage slaugherhouses" (aka "an empty room with a bloody mattress in it"). It seems every time the U.S. gets caught doing something profoundly immoral, the media launches a counter story of insurgent evildoing to sedate the masses into not being outraged.

Forget what your parents told you, apparently two wrongs do make a right.

They may not get many takers, but Iraqi insurgents in the besieged city of Fallujah on Saturday invited journalists to "embed" with them to report their side of the war. "All media will be allowed into Fallujah to witness the crusade against Islam and see the real face of America. U.S. media will not be excluded," said a statement by the Falluja Mujahideen Shura. "We will protect and transport them to the location of the events. There will be a special building for the journalists."

Bin Laden releases another video

Osama bin Laden delivered a new videotaped message in which he told Americans their security does not depend on the president they elect, but on U.S. policy. He also took some time to gloat over the fact that Bush was hiding in a classroom full of children instead of acting like a leader during the WTC attacks.

The "buzz" is that the Bush camp is going to spin this video as an endorsement of Kerry by Osama Bin Laden and try to get the populace to knee-jerk vote for him. It will be interesting to see how the Kerry camp deflects the Bush spin.

Even though Bin Laden criticizes the President, it will be hard to not call attention to the fact that Bin Laden is basically taunting the president publicly right before the election -- and rightly so. He's had years to run around all the while Bush promised he would be found and hasn't delivered. Let's pay close attention to how the media turns this video into an explosive batch of propagandist napalm on the American people.

While conservative pundits continue to spin the story of the United States losing three tons of high explosives in Iraq, claiming the explosives weren't there when they invaded, a Minneapolis news crew produces footage from their embedded journalist which proves the explosives were there during the invasion as soldiers even gave them a tour!

Good thing our military is so organized and on the ball. To add insult to injury, the other day GW Bush had to speak out on this issue claiming that the facts weren't in and he spewed this lovely gem:
A political candidate who jumps to conclusions without knowing the facts is not a person you want as your Commander in Chief

While the administration reassures Americans that they will not institute a draft, others within the miliary such as Col. David Hackworth say that the only way to continue the way we're going is with a draft otherwise the US does not have the resources to maintain or quell the current terrorist problems. Some sites are even poking fun at the idea of a draft. Who are you going to believe? Will we have a draft? Does an administration overflowing with people with no military experience outweigh lots of experts and people in the military who say otherwise?

Hold onto your tin foil hats. There's a buzz going around the Internet that Bin Laden has been hiding out in China, and Bush is selling out Taiwan and most-favored-nation status to China in exchange for Osama. The administration is also apparentely bending over for North Korea as part of the deal to get an "October surprise" which they feel will clinch the election. A spanish newspaper has broken the story wide open. Is the administration planning to negotiate a deal and secretly transport Bin Laden to Pakistan where he will by conveniently "captured" right before the election?

Wall Street Journal reporter's e-mail reveals real Iraq

Wall Street Journal reporter Farnaz Fassihi, 31, who has been stationed in Baghdad, sent an e-mail to what may have initally been a small circle of friends, outlining the ever increasing deterioration of Iraq. Doh! The e-mail is out and paints quite a vivid picture that defies what you might see on mainstream media, even though it is she who works for the mainstream media.
Despite President Bush's rosy assessments, Iraq remains a disaster. If under Saddam it was a 'potential' threat, under the Americans it has been transformed to 'imminent and active threat,' a foreign policy failure bound to haunt the United States for decades to come.

...Iraqis say that thanks to America they got freedom in exchange for insecurity. Guess what? They say they'd take security over freedom any day, even if it means having a dictator ruler.

I heard an educated Iraqi say today that if Saddam Hussein were allowed to run for elections he would get the majority of the vote. This is truly sad.

Read the whole article - it gets better, and before you think this is phony, note that the WSJ's managing editor has confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail.

Operation American Repression

We covered this story last week about an Army Reserve staff sergeant who last week wrote a critical analysis of the United States' prospects in Iraq.

The writer, Al Lorentz, a 20-year military veteran, now faces possible disciplinary action for disloyalty and insubordination. If charges are bought and the officer is found guilty, he could face 20 years in prison. It would be the first such disloyalty prosecution since the Vietnam War.

This is obviously another attempt by the administration to "terrorize" anyone who disagrees with the agenda or has their own opinion. Someone explain to me again about this "freedom" thing and what a great country this is?
