The White House reports, "Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Iraq, October 1-6, 2006. At the President’s request, Secretary Rice is leading a diplomatic effort to engage moderate leaders across the region."

As you can see, we won the war in Iraq and everything's going great. This obviously explains why, from the moment she steps foot off the airplane in Iraq in a US-controlled air base, she has to wear a bullet-proof vest.

While President Bush can't seem to make up his mind how to spin the Iraq invasion in the face of the 9/11 attacks, one thing seems ominously poignant: More Americans have now died in Iraq than died on 9/11. R.J. Eskow writes, "Iraq didn't attack us on that day, and our misguided policy there has now taken more American lives than Al Qaeda.

Here are the numbers: 3,015 Americans have died in Iraq as of September 9. 2,666 of these were military deaths and 349 were civilians. Who knows how many innocent Iraqis have been killed. The government doesn't seem to care enough to keep accurate numbers."

The U.S. secretly agreed to the "real demands" set by the group behind the August 14 kidnapping of two Fox News journalists in Gaza, according to a report in the pan-Arab newspaper al Hayat.

The paper quotes "informed sources close to the mediations" as saying that the U.S. secretly negotiated with the group through leaders of "the Palestinian popular resistance committees."

Last week, the previously unknown group calling itself "The Holy Jihad Brigades" issued a statement demanding the release of all Muslims held in U.S. prisons in return for the release of the two journalists. In fact, the paper reports that the public demand was not serious and that the group's "real demands" were that the U.S. press Israel to reopen the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Palestine and cease the shelling of "Palestinian activists'" residences.

Israeli bombings in Lebanon have created a huge oil slick that may become the worse environmental disaster in the country's history, it was reported Saturday.

The slick, moving up the Mediterranean coast of Lebanon toward Syria, involves at least 25,000 tons of thick fuel oil, The New York Times reported.

Its environmental damage is being compared to that of the Exxon Valdez spill, when a tanker ran aground and spilled about 40,000 tons of oil into Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1989.

Money transfer agencies have delayed or blocked thousands of cash deliveries on suspicion of terrorist connections simply because senders or recipients have names like Mohammed or Ahmed, company officials said.

In one example, an Indian driver said Western Union prevented him from sending $120 to a friend at home last month because the recipient's name was Mohammed.

New evidence has emerged that President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair agreed in January 2003 to attack Iraq regardless of whether diplomatic efforts succeeded.

Bush told Blair that the United Stated was considering flying U2 spy planes disguised as United Nations planes over Iraq in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein. If Iraq fired on the planes, it would help justify a U.S.-led invasion.

I found myself...Sleeping in a grave-size space, defined by two walls touching both my head my and feet, and surrounded with human bodies touching me from both sides, in a way that hardly leaves any chance to move at all during the long… long night, in a 12 square meters room stuffed with 35 people trying to sleep, and to hold themselves together in order not to fight…..The whole thing started when I went to the university to pay my tuition fees.."

Iraqi student khalid jarrar writes a detailed and poignant diatribe on his confrontation with the new Iraqi police, the trials of fellow prisoners he met along the way, and the horrible crime he was accused of: looking at the wrong blog on the Internet. One condition of his freedom was to not reveal what happened "inside" but he chose to publish his intense story.

The president of Venezuela has apparently suspended the DEA from operating in his country, claiming they were spying on the government in addition to their role of trying to stop drug trafficking and trying to grab oil. He wasn't too keen on working with an administration whom he claims, wants to kill him. Go figure? The leader isn't happy about U.S. agents stirring up dissent against him so now he's a "threat to the region." Are there any more countries left that the U.S. can piss off?

Juan Cole, Professor of History at the University of Michigan, has a very insightful photo essay about the history of the creation of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, America's training of Bin Laden, support for Saddam Hussein's gas attacks on Iranians, Saudi involvement and much more. It's a concise time-line of how the United States created the very enemies that are attacking us. One year these people are "Freedom fighters", the next they're "terrorists." One minute the U.S. is funding them; the next they're making back-room deals with their former allies' enemies and leaving them to die. Very interesting stuff. This isn't editorial -- these are the details that are regarded as factual issues leading up to the current situation.

Hours after Iraqi Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush's death in U.S. custody on Nov. 26, 2003, military officials issued a news release stating that the prisoner had died of natural causes after complaining of feeling sick.

Apparently, beating someone senseless, then sealing him inside a sleeping bag, wrapping the bag up in electrical cord and continuing to beat a person, according to the Army, can cause death by "Natural Causes."

Maybe they should have listed as the cause of the general's demise: "Death by drowning in Freedom(tm)" ?

In the wake of the availability of Microsoft's anticipated anti-spyware tool, closer examination indicates that Microsoft is ignoring their own rules for what classifies as spyware and what should be removed from a person's PC if found. Apparently major spyware purveyors have talked Microsoft into letting them off the hook, and there are rumors that Microsoft is in the process of acquiring a major spyware vendor itself.

The ordeal of Brennan Hawkins, the 11-year-old boy lost in the woods for four days in Utah last week, provides an insight into some potential disadvantages of having one's behavior controlled by one's worst fear. Amid the general celebration at his homecoming, the Salt Lake Tribune reported: "His parents said he followed two family rules by staying on the trail and not talking to strangers. Brennan said he heard rescuers before he was discovered Tuesday, but hid, going into what his family calls "midget mode" by pulling his shirt over his knees. He told his family he had feared being abducted.

In other words, a primary reason that Brennan wasn't found earlier is that he was hiding from searchers.
