Even as he came on stage to give the keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas, it was obvious that Tim Robbins' remarks had caused controversy backstage. The Academy Award-winning actor and critically acclaimed screenwriter, director and producer first indicated to the audience that he would not be giving his speech. Then, floor agents of the NAB organizers ordered journalists' video cameras turned off. An NAB spokesman later said Mr. Robbins contract had a "no filming" clause. Ultimately, Mr. Robbins changed his mind and started talking. However, some still recorded the audio and we have it. Listen to the six best minutes of the speech.

“We are at an abyss as an industry and as a country…

You, the broadcasters of this great nation have a tremendous amount of power, and a tremendous amount of potential to effect change… You can lift us up into a more enlightened age. Or you can hide behind that old adage, "I’m just a businessman. I provide what the audience wants." Well, I’m here to tell you that we don’t need to look at the car crash. We don’t need to live off the pain and humiliation of the unfortunate. We don’t need to celebrate our pornographic obsession with celebrity culture. We are better than that.

Some of you are trying… But I know you do so against the odds of ratings and job security. It is really up to the leaders in this room. It us up to you, the zions of this industry to leave behind formulas and focus groups and your own fears of job security. Only with your courage and your vision can we begin to imagine a world of broadcasting where the broad consensus of those with real power say, "Enough is Enough."

Wow!! Well said Tim, I agree totally. You really said it all and very well. Tim sounds like a man with a lot of brains and smarts and stands on what he believes. He spoke the truth! Now if anyone had on their "listening ears" that would be nice. I really think he did a great job. We need more men and woman to speak up like he did.

Right on Tim, well said!
Can It Be Done?

It would be a long hard road to accomplish the things Tim Robbins outlined in his speech. We have sunk to unbelievable standards in broadcasting in this country. There are few people left, altruistic enough, to risk their fortunes and job security to accomplish what he proposes. It is up to the consumer to bring about the changes needed by hitting them where it hurts the most, their pocketbooks. Refuse to pay to see their movies, buy their records, magazines, newspapers, books, or watch their TV shows and news broadcasts. If we want change, it is up to us to exact that change in the only way available to us, don't show them the money!!
