[Travel]
Use your imagination--You are an Israeli environmental scientist (this will be a good test of your imagination) on a Turkish flight to India. Along the way the plane develops mechanical problems and the pilot lets the passengers know that they are unfortunately going to have to put down early--IN IRAN. Time to kiss your Jewish ass good-bye, right?

Wrong! You get gifts and an invitation back! When Iranian security forces boarded the plane they went straight for Benny Medvedev, a researcher at Israel's Institute for Earth Sciences (good thing they weren't boarded by global warming skeptics!). Like every Israeli his age he serves in a reserve combat unit and he figured his number was up. However the security guys were extremely nice, told him that no harm would come to him, and even allowed him to use his laptop to contact his boss. His boss contacted Israel's Foreign Ministry and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni (must be a family name), who kept apprised of Medvedev's situation. When the plane finally left Tehran, Medvedev left with a wooden music box and was invited to return to Iran when times are better. Medvedev also invited his escort to Israel "when there will be peace" (currently scheduled for the day after never). Truly Iranians are a despicable part of the Axis of Evil--it's a good thing we don't have any diplomatic relations with them.

Although skepticism is always a good part of a measured response to something like this, one would hope that there's a certain amount of sincerity.

I think it's awesome- it demonstrates that people who are regularly called animals by elements in this country are actual people who are capable of being just as decent as anybody else. Actually, MORE so- can you imagine a U.S. Sky Marshal giving an Iranian passenger a present and an invitation back?

You have to wonder... there are probably stories like this all the time that happen. I'm sure there were stories like this of Jews going into Iraq as well. The media picks and chooses what stories they want to call attention to. It's interesting that now, on the brink of Bush threatening to attack Iran, that we're seeing stories like this leaked out -- I refuse to believe that before, there were no nice people in Iran or any country for that matter, who didn't blindly accept state or media-sanctioned hatred of certain groups of people. In a way, it's kind of sad this makes news. But it seems better news than what we normally get.
