The Bad Astronomer provides more reasons to believe the Bayou State is in the end times:

"Lousianans, congrats! You have joined Texas and South Carolina in being able to promote creationism to your kids!

Lousiana just elected Bobby Jindal as governor. He is/was a Congressman, but ran for governor and just won the election.

Why does this doom the state? Because Jindal has made it clear he supports creationism. Very, very clear.

[Terroir-ism]
In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.

The memos, often referred to as "snowflakes," shed light on Rumsfeld's brusque management style and on his efforts to address key challenges during his tenure as Pentagon chief. Spanning from 2002 to shortly after his resignation following the 2006 congressional elections, a sampling of his trademark missives obtained yesterday reveals a defense secretary disdainful of media criticism and driven to reshape public opinion of the Iraq war.

Ecuador to US: Only Fair To Give Us Military Base In Miami

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa said Washington must let him open a military base in Miami if the United States wants to keep using an air base on Ecuador's Pacific coast.

Correa has refused to renew Washington's lease on the Manta air base, set to expire in 2009. U.S. officials say it is vital for counter-narcotics surveillance operations on Pacific drug-running routes.

"We'll renew the base on one condition: that they let us put a base in Miami -- an Ecuadorean base," Correa said in an interview during a trip to Italy.

"If there's no problem having foreign soldiers on a country's soil, surely they'll let us have an Ecuadorean base in the United States."

Restore Habeas Corpus - Act Now!

Awhile back, the creatures in Congress thought that it was no big deal to take away our basic rights, such as the right to being told what we're charged with if we're arrested, and not being detained indefinitely.

A new bill has been introduced, the "Habeas Corpus Restoration Act" which promises to restore these basic rights that were taken away. Do your political representatives support this law? You might be surprised.

UPDATE: Thanks for doing your part! It really helped. What? You didn't contact your representative? Well that explains why the measure failed.

By the way, if you think there's no difference between Republicans and Democrats, think again. Every single Democrat supported restoring Habeas Corpus. All but six republicans (Hagel (R-NE) Lugar (R-IN) Smith (R-OR) Snowe (R-ME) Specter (R-PA) Sununu (R-NH)) voted against it. All politicians may be slime, but the Democrats clearly seem to have a little more respect for the Constitution and citizens' rights - Let's NOT FORGET THIS COME ELECTION TIME!

Only A Fraction Of Promised Money Spent Rebuilding New Orleans

On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, President Bush made yet another visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans, where he told astonished residents that, as an occasional visitor to the city, he could see all kinds of improvements that they--being merely residents who see the city every day--could not. And he repeated constantly the huge numbers to show that the federal government had showered the area with as much cold, hard cash as Katrina had showered it with rain.

But the people of New Orleans, who deal daily with the stalled reconstruction, the funds mired in red tape, the gutted health care system, the schools that were failing before the storm and are now only half-rebuilt, the closed day care and the public housing that has not yet reopened--even the undamaged parts--and the rebuilding of which has not even begun--well, they see things differently.

And on their behalf, New Orleans City Councilwoman Shelley Midura sent the following open letter to President George Bush. (Emphasis added.)

[Essential Factoids]
It seems that BSalert wasn't the only one who noticed that the president's approval rating rises when gas prices fall. Starting in August...about the time the Republicans began to get an inkling that they might not be greeted with chocolates and flowers at the polls this time...gas prices had conveniently been dropping to less insane levels. This gave the Democrats one less sore spot to poke in voters who needed a little reminder why they didn't like the status quo. But even cheap(er) gas wasn't enough to buy off the voters this time. And now that the election's over, have you noticed any changes at the pump?

Santorum Loses Senate; Men Free To Marry Dogs Now!

Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has lost his job to his Democratic challenger. Santorum has been an outspoken anti-gay, anti-choice activist in Congress. Santorum was the senator who claimed if we legalize gay marriage, there would be nothing to stop men from marrying dogs, too. Our society should undoubtedly brace itself for this upcoming spate of people-to-pet marriages in the absence of the moral direction of the former Republican senator.

Here's a nice tidbit on the defeated Senator and his family:
Santorum and his wife, Karen Garver Santorum, have six children: Elizabeth Anne (born 1991); Richard John ("Johnny"), Jr. (born 1993); Daniel James (born 1995); Sarah Maria (born 1998); Peter Kenneth (born 1999); and Patrick Francis (born 2001). In 1996, their son Gabriel Michael was born prematurely and lived for only two hours (a sonogram taken before Gabriel was born revealed that his posterior urethral valve was closed and that the prognosis for his survival was therefore poor). Karen Santorum wrote a book about the experience: Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum. In it, she writes that the couple brought the deceased infant home from the hospital and introduced the dead child to their living children as "your brother Gabriel" and slept with the body overnight before returning him to the hospital. The anecdote was also written about by Michael Sokolove in a 2005 New York Times magazine story on Santorum. Karen is also the author of a book on etiquette for children.
Let's all weep a litle bit for the moral republicans who have lost the Senate. Maybe some day they can lecture us again about the evils of man-dog relations and the goodness of sleeping with infant corpses.

A Kentucky poll worker has been accused of CHOKING a voter and trying to push them out the door of a Jefferson County polling place. The worker stands charged with assault and attempting to interfere with an election. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking Kentucky's Poll-Working Prisoners program is going to come under some pretty heavy scrutiny.
