Republican hopeful Mike Huckabee reached out to a questionable funding source this week — Texas televangelist Kenneth Copeland, one of the targets of a Senate Finance Committee investigation into the funding and governance of "prosperity gospel" ministries.

At Copeland’s annual by-invitation-only Minister's Conference at his Newark, Texas, headquarters Jan. 23, Copeland received a call during the meeting from Huckabee requesting emergency financing. According Doug Wead, former Bush family evangelical adviser, Copeland and his supporters at the conference raised $111,000 in cash for Huckabee, with about a million dollars in pledged donations, after he temporarily adjourned the conference and then reconvened the group as a "private meeting."

In the midst of Ron Paul mania, much of what this guy stands for seems to have been swept by the wayside if it doesn't fit into the idealistic agenda promoted by his online army. Well, let's hear the man's own words on an important issue such as the separation of church and state which Ron Paul considers to be "a war on religion" and not a Constitutional ideal...

Daniel Dennett: Ants, Terrorism, and the Awesome Power of Memes

[Sociology]
Here's one of those talks that can change your view of the world forever. Starting with the deceptively simple story of an ant, Dan Dennett unleashes a dazzling sequence of ideas, making a powerful case for the existence of "memes" -- a term coined by Richard Dawkins for mental concepts that are literally alive and capable of spreading from brain to brain. On the way, look out for:
+ a powerful one-sentence secret of happiness
+ a compelling insight into terrorists' motivation
+ a chilling view of Islam
And just when you think you know where the talk's heading, it dramatically shifts direction and questions some of western culture's fundamental assumptions. This. Is. Unmissable.

Richard Dawkins steps away from his more traditional role as evolutionary biologist and talks more about the obsolete role religion has in society. Here's a show that was produced and aired in the UK that US network television would never have have the balls to air. Check it out. The extended DVD of this show has just recently been released.

Yesterday, Americans United asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park, Calif., for a potential violation of federal tax law barring electioneering by non-profit groups. Dr. Wiley S. Drake, pastor of the church, issued a press release on church letterhead endorsing Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and subsequently offered the endorsement on a church-affiliated radio show.

Instead of responding to Americans United’s concern of illegal activity, Drake issued yesterday afternoon a plea to his supporters to join in “imprecatory prayers” (curses) every morning for Americans United and its staff.

Liberty University, Jerry Falwell, and Bomb-Making 101

You might think that since Jerry Falwell has shuffled off his pudgy mortal coil and gone to wherever people like him go when they die (I picture the eternal equivalent of Newark, New Jersey at rush hour) that he can no longer cause any more harm. But of course you'd be wrong (it'd be a much shorter article, and perhaps a better world, if that were true). At the funeral a small number of protesters had gathered to signal their disgust with the likes of Falwell, which didn't sit too well with some of his students at Liberty University (sic), so they staged a counter-protest. But that didn't go quite far enough for one young man.
