If you think television is getting dumber, that might be an understatement considering the new host of the morning show, "The View" isn't quite ready to admit the earth might not be flat.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Is the world flat?

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Is the world flat? (laughter)

SHEPHERD: …I Don’t know.

GOLDBERG: What do you think?

SHEPHERD: I… I never thought about it, Whoopi. Is the world flat? I never thought about it.

BARBARA WALTERS: You’ve never thought about whether the world was round or flat?

SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child–

WALTERS: Well you can do both.

SHEPERD: …how I’m going to take care of my family. The world, is the world flat has never entered into, like that has not been an important thing to me.

ELIZABETH HASSELBECK: You’ll teach your son, Jeffery, right?

SHEPHERD: If my son, Jeffery, asks me ‘is the world flat,’ I guess I would go…

JOY BEHAR: You know, didn’t some person already work this question out? I mean, why are we doing this again? (laughter, applause)

Well, she may not be be entirely knowledgeable enough to say "no, the world is round", but at least she's smart enough to admit ignorance and try to find out, instead of issuing a blanket statement "Duh, yeah, the world's flat." That's a start.

This can't be real, it has to be a joke. There is no way she's gone through life without seeing a globe or watching the discovery channel for 5 minutes.

The way I saw it, she was sort of using it as an extreme example. The conversation went from an issue with a lot of controversy that's very complex, to a factoid that everyone knows, so I think she used that as an example to say "let's find out" instead of "this is the way it is, no exceptions."

And of course, it's the View, so if anyone says anything remotely controversial, stupid, or anything that makes a good sound byte, it gets more press than it's worth.

I may be wrong. But in a discussion that animated, I could see it turning out that way.

I'll admit that I haven't seen the context that this was taken from, but I'm sick of people using poverty and struggle to justify their small minds.

Then again, if that's the case, Elizabeth has no excuse for her ignorance. I doubt she's struggled much, but she manages to express many ignorant views every day.
