A study published in the journal Current Biology reveals that chimpanzees of any age prefer older female chimps when seeking a mate and younger females have to beg for attention of the sexual kind. It is what the researchers call "one of the biggest behavioural differences between humans and our closest biological relatives" (other than public masturbation and flinging fecal matter, that is).

The ravages that time and bearing young can take on an older female are apparently just a sign to potential suitors that she's good at it and can give his little swimmers the best genetic leg-up on the competition. The youngest females have to settle for the weakest and most unwanted males for mating. Older females are much more dominant socially as well, and fights can break out among males to get at the best specimens. Chimpanzees are fertile throughout their lives, and the researchers suggest that human desire for younger women is due, in some part, to the occurrence of menopause in women.
