If you've been surfing around the net, you've probably seen those annoying "click here to win a free iPod" banner ads. It's basically a Ponzi-esque marketing scheme that people fall for. An enterprising site called iMockery.com has put together a very funny collection of new ads for these schemes.

This is a little story about a guy named Thesith Williams, who was looking for a fresh start. He figured a clever way would be to "seek revenge" by naming his web site after the title of the latest film in the uber-over-hyped Star Wars franchise. Actually this is a story about a guy who snatches the domain, revengeofthesith.com and concocts a clever story of a pseudo-ficticious novel that the web site promotes, whereupon he can capitalize on the notoriety of the aforementioned George Lucas separate-a-geek-from-his-money-fest.

The web site Howstuffworks.com used to be a pretty neat site, until like traditional media they decided to completely eradicate the line between editorial and advertising. In the wake of the next Star Wars movie, they've taken to publishing articles such as How Stuff Works: a Lightsaber. Ok, I can appreciate the humor of the article, but I still think there's something wrong about a science-oriented site tainting their content with viral marketing propaganda.

Is there anything left that hasn't been branded by the team of Star Wars marketing whores?

Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster won an auction on eBay for the first private communication to be transmitted into deep space. As a result, on March 5th, they transmitted 138,000 classified ads into outer space.

If you've ever browsed Craigslist, it's a frightening thought that this San Francisco-based classified ad company might have broadcast a thousand messages about circumcision, used mattresses, and bad dating experiences into space. It's bad enough that aliens might intercept errant tv transmissions of "Friends" or "CNN Crossfire", but Craigslist? Am I the only one who now believes Earth's invasion by Jerry Springer-esque aliens is inevitable?

It seems Fiona Apple, dark pop songstress who disappeared from the scene several years ago is again making news. Apparently she put out an album called, Extraordinary Machine, that her record label, Sony, didn't feel contained an appropriate pop single, so they held her work hostage and wouldn't release the album. Now tracks from this album have mysteriously appeared on the Internet, delighting her fans. The irony is that for all the bad-guy-image Sony may inherit from this scenario, they'll probably ride this net-buzz all the way to the bank, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the company actually leaked the album to create a buzz.
