U.S. info-sharing initiative called a flop

Nearly a year after its launch, a federal office created as a conduit for corporate America to provide the government with sensitive information about critical vulnerabilities has been all but rejected by the technology industry that helped conceive it. The Protected Critical Infrastructure Information program allows companies providing government services to report security problems but not get in trouble, or have their problems made public. There goes more than $5M of taxpayer money for an insulting program designed to protect corporations and the government, but not let the public know about important computer security issues.

Interestingly enough, virtually none of the program participants, even Microsoft have filed any notices of vulnerabilities with the newly-created office. This may not bode well for the administration's upcoming project: the "Tell us if you murdered someone and haven't been caught" program.

Spamhaus points Feds to Tsunami spammer

A US man has been arrested for allegedly sending around 800,000 spam emails which attempted to scam money from individuals who believed them to be genuine fundraising messages supporting the Tsunami appeal. Meanwhile the full-time, pro spammers who are responsible for the worm/virus invasion continue to operate. It just goes to show you, you can break the law as long as you don't tread on anything that's big in the news or messes with a major U.S. corporation. However, we are hopeful that the Feds seem to actually be taking action against some people these days, even though this only seems to be because a third party actually did the real detective work.

American Guilty in UN Oil-For-Food Scandal

A US Iraqi businessman, accused of pocketing millions of dollars through the UN oil-for-food program with Iraq, pleaded guilty yesterday to acting as an illegal agent of Saddam Hussein's government. American conservative pundits widely criticized the UN's effectiveness based on the oil-for-food scandal, even though ironically, many Americans and American interests are now being shown to have profited in the illegal operation.
