Tea Party Convention Getting A Little Murky

The National Tea Party Convention, an event I'm sure many readers have already gotten tickets for, has run into a couple of snags. Fortunately there's one big-haired semi-pro ex-governor who's going to pull it out of its doldrums.

The event, the first of its kind, is to take place in Nashville, TN next month and bring together all the various crackpots/patriots comprising of the national Tea Party movement. It's billed mainly as a chance for the leadership of this dispersed movement to listen to like-minded speakers and make use of "workshops, seminars, information centers, and organizational tools for leaders to take back to their respective local Tea Party organizations."

But there's trouble abrewin' (see what I did there?). Many have become uneasy at the high price of admission to the event ($550 not including travel and lodging) and the fact that the event is for profit. I don't know what the Tea Partiers' problem is--it's just capitalism at work. If you need a subsidy or something, Tea Party Nation suggests that "fifty people in a small tea party group for example each investing $10-20 dollars would take care of most of the costs to a delegate. This is not a huge investment money[sic] but information wise it will yield huge returns." So there you go, problem solved.

And still... some are unhappy. Two of the highest profile speakers, Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) have already dropped out (and getting Michele Bachmann to not talk is quite an achievement). But fear not, brave champions of freedom, for there's one person who never says no to a speaking fee. I'm talking, of course, about Gov. Sarah Palin. The ex-Governor of Alaska has decided that she's not gonna turn her back on the people who need her the most. When asked whether she was still planning on attending by Greta Van Susteran after the other main speakers dropped out, her reply was "Oh, you betcha I?m going to be there." She also says she will not personally benefit because her $115,000 speaking fee will be donated to "the cause". Whether she's referring to her own PAC, the RNC, Tea Party Nation, or an unborn sixth child to be named "TheCause" remains to be seen.
