Jesus went to the mall and a movie Saturday.

The life-size cutout of Jesus was accompanied by a youth group from Lamoni United Methodist Church who came to Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, Iowa to view the movie "The Nativity Story."

As they took turns pushing the cardboard Jesus on a two-wheeled handcart through the mall's festive decorations and Christmas music, the faces of the shoppers around them registered surprise and curiosity.

Chatter at the food court quieted when the kids pushed Jesus by. Kiosk shopkeepers asked what was going on.

One older man burdened with shopping bags was so fascinated, he nearly blundered into a glittering Christmas tree.

The cardboard Jesus is an exercise in living their faith and "taking Jesus Christ with them everywhere," said the Rev. Steve McElroy.

Earlier this year, McElroy had talked to about 20 middle school and high school students in his church about the challenge in living as a Christian.

The discussion became more real when the pastor showed up with the cardboard cutout and asked the youth group if they would take Jesus with them any time they were together.

God is such a waste...

We as a society expend so much energy on such a worthless thing. If we put this much energy into teaching our children what life is really about the world would be a much better place.

Ditto. I totally agree with David.

I think the problem is everybody has a different idea of what life is about. However, it seems to me, that religion is all about what happens after life is over, so why so many people seem preoccupied with this while they're alive, is, as you say, quite a pointless waste of energy.

I'm insulted, they made me too yellow and small. See, if those little jerks cared about me then they'd have made me eight feet tall, white, and with a more modern haircut.

Nothing says "respect" like wheeling a yellow cutout of someone around the mall.

Curious how people care so much about things just because other people tell them they're supposed to.

Agreed, these folks seem angry, bitter and sick

The funny thing is, the real core in most of Jesus's teachings was about how we treat our fellow human. IMHO, it's the men through the ages that put a lot of the fearmongering in the Bible, to help control the masses.

Someone above said it nicely. If people spent more time focusing on the real world instead of the fantasy afterlife and these mythical figures, the world WOULD be a better place and we wouldn't need to cart jesus around.
Stupid churchies

stupid churcies, don't you know praying in public is a sin?

Carting around a cardboard cutout of a 2000-year-old zombie is considered "praying"? o_O
too literal

It seems an interesting point, a very hands on approach to a lesson the youth pastor is trying to make. However, there's not much that I can see that is good about taking a portrait, let alone a life size image, of Jesus around.
