Historians have long noted that the United States and the Soviet Union came within a whisper of nuclear war during the 13-day standoff after the United States discovered that Moscow had secretly installed nuclear missiles in Cuba. However, what was discovered last year (and apparently not widely covered in the media) was that Russia was in the process of approving a nuclear strike, but one of the three submarine commanders involved decided to not go along with the order.

The information came to light during an assembly of U.S. and Russian authorities for an event commemorating the 40th anniversary. Interesting that the mainstream media last year didn't think that coming so close to world destruction was newsworthy?

Chapela was denied tenure at Berkeley, despite "overwhelming support from his own department and from his academic peers," GM Watch founder Jonathan Matthews writes. Chapela had also been a critic of a $25 million research deal between UC Berkeley and the Swiss biotechnology company Novartis (now Syngenta). Chapela supporters believe he is being retaliated against for his criticism of the biotech industry.

Students at one of the area's largest Christian schools are reading a controversial booklet that critics say whitewashes Southern slavery with its view that slaves lived "a life of plenty, of simple pleasures."

Leaders at Cary Christian School say they are not condoning slavery by using "Southern Slavery, As It Was," a booklet that attempts to provide a biblical justification for slavery and asserts that slaves weren't treated as badly as people think.

This joins other fine books in the school library including, "How the Germans perfected oven technology", and "KKK in Mississippi: pioneers in linen and outdoor lighting".

An online university that supposedly granted a graduate degree in business to a pet cat was sued Monday for consumer fraud by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. Rumor has it the cat immediately got a job with Arthur Anderson.

Obviously, the tip-off was a cat with an MBA. They should have limited their student body to dogs and hamsters and nobody would have been the wiser.
