If you've seen the movie "Apocalypse Now" or read Joseph Conrad's book, "Heart of Darkness," you might be experiencing deja vu when seeing the antics of Dick Cheney and the Bush White House. It seems Cheney has definitely "gotten off the boat" and the White House is running its own little nation-within-a-nation that exists in a vaporous netherworld between the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches.

The news media is finally perking up and digging deeper into the enigma that is the Vice President of the United States. It seems Dick Cheney claims he's not part of the Executive branch of the government, won't tell anybody what he does, who he sees, or even who is on his payroll...

It's no secret the Executive branch has contempt FOR Congress, but now they may be in Contempt OF Congress.

House Judiciary Committee Democrats warned yesterday they would pursue a contempt of Congress motion if the White House fails respond to subpoenas for testimony and documents related to the firings of U.S. attorneys last year.

The deadline for a response is Thursday, June 28. If the White House does not comply, it opens the possibility of a constitutional showdown between the two branches. In an ironic twist, the Department of Justice (DoJ) would be called on to enforce the contempt motion.

The new director of the National Hurricane Center is doing his job. He wants to make sure that our weather scientists can see a hurricane coming from a long way off and prepare accordingly. Toward that end he's been pointing out some problems that are hampering that effort as well as some spending priorities that are out of whack. His superiors, rather than actually FIXING anything, are demanding that he stop TALKING about the problems.

[Activists]
After first sending a bold message to the President that Congress would no longer give Bush a blank check of taxpayer dollars for his war without end, the second go-round has Congressional leaders doing a 180-degree turn and giving the Executive branch exactly what they want: a blank check with no demand for troop withdrawal timetables.

The American people are furious, and some organizations are sending a strong message to Congress: NO BLANK CHECK. We here at BSAlert will keep you informed as to each and every Congressman who votes for this spineless bill that further authorizes the war machine. Democrats and Republicans are no longer safe: if you don't listen to the American people, you will be out of a job. There's also a petition to sign.

Sure, I could look it up in a dictionary but that takes too long and could potentially involve paper cuts. Let us instead cast about for examples in modern life. Take, for example, a man who strongly believes (and says it loudly) that those who sit on the far right of the political spectrum have the strongest moral fiber, the best values. No, THIS is not hypocrisy (merely delusion)--what IS hypocrisy is to do so while doing what he's being charged with doing to little girls.
