If you've seen the movie "Apocalypse Now" or read Joseph Conrad's book, "Heart of Darkness," you might be experiencing deja vu when seeing the antics of Dick Cheney and the Bush White House. It seems Cheney has definitely "gotten off the boat" and the White House is running its own little nation-within-a-nation that exists in a vaporous netherworld between the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches.
The new director of the National Hurricane Center is doing his job. He wants to make sure that our weather scientists can see a hurricane coming from a long way off and prepare accordingly. Toward that end he's been pointing out some problems that are hampering that effort as well as some spending priorities that are out of whack. His superiors, rather than actually FIXING anything, are demanding that he stop TALKING about the problems.
Construction of the U.S. embassy in Iraq, set to open in September, is projected to cost $592 million, with a staff of 1,000 people and operating costs totaling $1.2 billion a year. Hypocrisy is a word that gets thrown around A LOT these days, mostly in political circles. But how would one define hypocrisy? Sure, I could look it up in a dictionary but that takes too long and could potentially involve paper cuts. Let us instead cast about for examples in modern life. Take, for example, a man who strongly believes (and says it loudly) that those who sit on the far right of the political spectrum have the strongest moral fiber, the best values. No, THIS is not hypocrisy (merely delusion)--what IS hypocrisy is to do so while doing what he's being charged with doing to little girls.
