Sam Harris' Top Ten Myths About Atheism

Posted by Pile (11568 views) Add this story to MyYahoo Add this article to del.icio.us Submit article to Reddit Add story to Furl Add story to StumbleUpon [E-Mail link]

[Edumakashun]
Several polls indicate that the term "atheism" has acquired such an extraordinary stigma in the United States that being an atheist is now a perfect impediment to a career in politics (in a way that being black, Muslim or homosexual is not). According to a recent Newsweek poll, only 37% of Americans would vote for an otherwise qualified atheist for president.

Atheists are often imagined to be intolerant, immoral, depressed, blind to the beauty of nature and dogmatically closed to evidence of the supernatural.

Even John Locke, one of the great patriarchs of the Enlightenment, believed that atheism was "not at all to be tolerated" because, he said, "promises, covenants and oaths, which are the bonds of human societies, can have no hold upon an atheist."

That was more than 300 years ago. But in the United States today, little seems to have changed. A remarkable 87% of the population claims "never to doubt" the existence of God; fewer than 10% identify themselves as atheists — and their reputation appears to be deteriorating.

Given that we know that atheists are often among the most intelligent and scientifically literate people in any society, it seems important to deflate the myths that prevent them from playing a larger role in our national discourse.

The Christianists And The Christian Embassy

Posted by Pile (8237 views) Add this story to MyYahoo Add this article to del.icio.us Submit article to Reddit Add story to Furl Add story to StumbleUpon [E-Mail link]

A military watchdog group is asking the Defense Department to investigate whether seven Army and Air Force officers violated regulations by appearing in uniform in a promotional video for an evangelical Christian organization. In the video, much of which was filmed inside the Pentagon, four generals and three colonels praise the Christian Embassy, a group that evangelizes among military leaders, politicians, and diplomats in Washington. These "Military Christianists" use their uniforms to proselytize, and swear an oath of loyalty, putting loyalty to country third behind God and family.

Some groups are very concerned about whether or not our military leaders can now be trusted to honor their oath of allegiance to the Constitution, which is in direct opposition with the objective of the Christian Embassy and their membership in this "cult."

"We have a systemic problem. You sound like you're too young to remember Robert Redford in "Three Days of the Condor," but the premise of that movie was that there was a CIA within the CIA. We have a virulently dominionist, fundamentalist evangelical Christian element within the Pentagon. They would prefer this to be the "Pentecostalgon," not the Pentagon. That's what they would prefer. They're trying to turn the Pentagon into a frickin' faith-based initiative, and that is not what our military is about."

Santorum Loses Senate; Men Free To Marry Dogs Now!

Posted by Pile (22361 views) Add this story to MyYahoo Add this article to del.icio.us Submit article to Reddit Add story to Furl Add story to StumbleUpon [E-Mail link]

Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has lost his job to his Democratic challenger. Santorum has been an outspoken anti-gay, anti-choice activist in Congress. Santorum was the senator who claimed if we legalize gay marriage, there would be nothing to stop men from marrying dogs, too. Our society should undoubtedly brace itself for this upcoming spate of people-to-pet marriages in the absence of the moral direction of the former Republican senator.

Here's a nice tidbit on the defeated Senator and his family:
Santorum and his wife, Karen Garver Santorum, have six children: Elizabeth Anne (born 1991); Richard John ("Johnny"), Jr. (born 1993); Daniel James (born 1995); Sarah Maria (born 1998); Peter Kenneth (born 1999); and Patrick Francis (born 2001). In 1996, their son Gabriel Michael was born prematurely and lived for only two hours (a sonogram taken before Gabriel was born revealed that his posterior urethral valve was closed and that the prognosis for his survival was therefore poor). Karen Santorum wrote a book about the experience: Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum. In it, she writes that the couple brought the deceased infant home from the hospital and introduced the dead child to their living children as "your brother Gabriel" and slept with the body overnight before returning him to the hospital. The anecdote was also written about by Michael Sokolove in a 2005 New York Times magazine story on Santorum. Karen is also the author of a book on etiquette for children.
Let's all weep a litle bit for the moral republicans who have lost the Senate. Maybe some day they can lecture us again about the evils of man-dog relations and the goodness of sleeping with infant corpses.

Major Christian Leader, Ted Haggard Caught In Gay Scandal

Rev. Ted Haggard, married father of five, resigned as president of the 30 million-member National Association of Evangelicals on Thursday after being accused of paying a man for sex in monthly trysts over the past three years.

Haggard — an outspoken opponent of the drive for gay marriage — also stepped down as senior pastor at his 14,000-member New Life Church pending an investigation by a church panel, saying he could “not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations.”

Male escort Mike Jones, whose allegations were first aired on KHOW-AM radio in Denver, claimed Haggard paid him to have sex nearly every month over three years. Jones also said Haggard snorted methamphetamine before their sexual encounters to heighten his experience.

..Well, isn't that special...

Update:
The Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard: "Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct."

Public Expression of Religion Act = Gov. Mandated Religion

There is a very scary series of bills moving through both houses of Congress right now, and it's under the radar of the mainstream media (as usual). These bills are designed to keep people from taking legal action against the government in areas relating to the separation of church and state. As is typical, the name of the bill, "Public Expression of Religion Act of 2005" is totally bogus. The bill claims to give people the "freedom" to express religious views without fear of legal intimidation. What this translates to is special protection from repurcussions of extending religious influence and promotion in areas where it is illegal and unconstitutional!

Please take a closer look at this very, VERY dangerous legislation.

Update: This bill is now being called, "The Christian Supremacy Act" by people in politics.

The Bush administration has clearly set their priorities for the country, with new legislation that dramatically increases fines levied by the FCC over "indecent" broadcasting. The problem is these new fines make a mockery of the government's enforcement scheme in other areas many thinking people find find a lot more important.

A review of fines levied by other federal agencies suggests that the government may be taking swear words a bit too seriously. If the bill passes the Senate, Bono saying "f*cking brilliant" on the air would carry the exact same penalty as illegally testing pesticides on human subjects. And for the price of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" during the Super Bowl, you could cause the wrongful death of an elderly patient in a nursing home and still have enough money left to create dangerous mishaps at two nuclear reactors.
